CIH imparts technical knowhow on cultivation of exotic crops

Dimapur, July 231 (MExN): The Central Institute of Horticulture, Medziphema conducted a 2-day virtual training on July 15 and 16 with the objective to impart technological knowledge on cultivation of exotic vegetables under protected structures and hydroponics and to promote cultivation of potential crops like avocado and rambutan in the North East Region. 

According to a press release, the first day of training focused on cultivation of exotic vegetables wherein, Dr Praveen Singh, Expert on Exotic Vegetables & Hydroponics, discussed on cultivation of high value exotic vegetables such as capsicum, zucchini, asparagus, and Brussel sprouts under protected cultivation. Thunglamo Humtsoe, Proprietor of Urban Grower from Wokha delivered a lecture on cultivation of kale, lettuce and Swiss chard under Hydroponics.

Apart from online training, interaction between participants and resource persons were also conducted after each technical session. The participants comprised of scholars, rural youths, upcoming entrepreneurs, state officials and ATMA functionaries of the region. Altogether 67 participants joined the virtual training programme, the release stated.

On the second day of training, Dr G Karunakaran, Principal Scientist from ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru, delivered a presentation on production technologies of potential fruit crops like avocado and rambutan. A total of 50 participants comprising of horticulture officers, scientists, KVK field functionaries from Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh actively participated and interacted with subject expert, the release stated.

Dr NK Patle, Addl. Commissioner & Director in-charge CIH, also interacted with all the participants during the programme and encouraged them to be practical with the technical knowledge, it stated.
