Colonial feature in Nagaland

Dimapur| January 4 : Nagaland is known primarily for its scenic beauty and multi-ethnic culture. It does not boast of historic forts, regal palaces, awe-inspiring temples or stately monuments. But, what most people don’t know is that, there are atleast 15 standing remnants of the British colonial past in Nagaland: the Inspection Bungalows or IB. The British bungalows, mostly built in the early part of the 20th century, are till today existent in many district of the state.

The Inspection Bungalow was established by the British Army during the colonial ear in different pockets of the state. The bungalows were used as administrative outposts and rest-house for British officers. Though the designs resemble English cottages, interestingly, most of the construction works were done by Naga men. Some of their names have been inscribed on the walls and ceilings.

After the withdrawal of British from India, the bungalows were abandoned. Almost all were worn out with time and left to ruin. However, the Department of Tourism sensed the need to renovate the bungalows in order to preserve colonial heritage, as well as promote tourism. Most of the bungalows were renovated the latter part of the last decade.

While some of them have been given simple brush-ups, others bungalows are today equipped with modern fittings and used as guest houses. The original foundation and architect have not been touched though. Inspection Bungalows in places like Phek and Khonoma are definitely worth visiting.
