Dimapur, May 28 (MExN): Responding to the demand for fresh Rengma Hoho polls and the submission of a memorandum to that effect by Tesophenyu and Kandini group comprising of 10 villages, the Election Commission of the Rengma Hoho has clarified on several counts.

It was stated that the General Body on May 20 set up the Election Commission to conduct the elections of office bearers to the office of the Rengma Hoho, by a one village-one vote basis according to a clarification from Ato Kent R, Convener of the Election Commission. There were 33 electorates representing 32 villages and 1 Tseminyu Town Council, eligible for voting, out of which 10 voters representing 10 villages abstained from voting. In this regard, the majority verdict was in favor of conducting the election, the commission clarified.

“An Election Commission was constituted with the consent of all the members present including the ten villages. The Commission did receive a representation requesting for the inclusion of all GBs to vote in the election which was referred back to the House.

However the house refused to accept the representation and reaffirmed the one village-one vote basis i.e., either the Village Council Chairman or the village Representative” the commission clarified. Soon after, the election conducted on May 20, was carried in accordance with the decision taken by the General Body pending the approval of the new constitution which will be submitted within a three months’ time, the Commission stated.

Any objection with reference to article (s)/clause(s) on addition, remission or omission, the Constitution Drafting Committee should be appraised during the presentation.

“Since the decision/mandate of the majority has been taken into consideration at all times there should be no dispute regarding the status of the elected office bearers of the Rengma Hoho who were elected on May 20 2006” the Election Commission stated.  In the view of the matters pointed out, the Election Commission informed all organizations  and village councils that the commission’s members does not have the authority for any form of declaration nor the power to ‘appease one and provoke the other.’
