Liphanyan (Wokha) | March 29
The role of one Alauddin, a contractor running the stone quarry in Liphanyan-Koro area, in the brutal killing of three persons on March 27 last has come under scanner. Kyong villagers of Ralan area said that this is the third such incidents to happen in the stone quarry run by Alauddin based at Mudhopur village, some 2 km from Kherbari.
Villagers said the first incident was in 2007 when the then Wokha district BJP President, Tsenthungo, was brutally assaulted by Alauddin’s workers, which maimed him for life. The second incident took place in 2009 when an Assam Rifles subedar and a jawan were beaten to death, again by Alauddin’s men when the AR personnel had gone to the site after receiving intelligence inputs. A case is still pending in an Assam court relating to the murder of the two AR personnel, sources said.
In the March 27 incident, villagers said Thungbemo, the fourth person who escaped from the jaws of death, had narrated that the attack was preplanned. According to Thungbemo, the GPRN/NSCN had come to the quarry as per earlier discussion with Alauuddin on “tax’. But when the four of them went, they were taken by surprise as the labourers all of a sudden brandished iron rods and started attacking the four.
A 9mm pistol which Thungbemo was carrying was also reportedly snatched by the attackers.
In the public meeting, an irate villager branded Alauddin as an “Al Qaeda” agent and follower of Osama bin laden. Villagers have also accused CRPF, the neutral force manning the disturbed area belt (DAB) of playing a partisan role in favour of Assam side and the illegal migrants.
Some villagers have even gone to the extent of saying that they suspect that the personnel of 142 CRPF, F Company, Sector ‘C’ at Kherbari are being bribed by Alauuddin to protect his interests. It is interesting to note that the F Company has erected a bunker just to the entrance of the area where the contractor has his stone deposits.
“Otherwise, why should they (CRPF) erect bunker far away from their camp. On numerous occasions, when Naga youths are being assaulted by Alauddin’s men in this area (Kherbari), the CRPF personnel always look the other way,” a Kyong villager said.
Villagers alleged that in the third incident too, the CRPF personnel were all the time witness to the brutal killing of the three persons as their camp is just opposite the quarry on the other side of the river. “But they did not intervene. After the crime all the attackers (labourers) fled in Alauddin’s vehicles and crossed the CRPF gate but again the CRPF jawans took no action but let the attackers slip away,” the villager added.
Interestingly, sources said that it was the CRPF who first informed the Wokha district administration about the incident. Taking note of the villagers complaints, Parliamentary Secretary for Border Affairs, Y Patton, said the general sentiment of Ralan public is that the CRPF is not a neutral force but Assam force. DC Wokha also said that the CRPF have to come out openly and help identify the culprits in the murder case.
