Kohima | September 9

After almost three years since the Naga Bazaar firing incident in Kohima, where a class-X student was shot at by a jawan of the 11th Indian Reserve (NAP) Battalion, final arguments of the case was held on Tuesday by the Additional District & Sessions Judge, Kohima. However the verdict would be pronounced only on September 18.

It may be recalled that  on the fateful night of September 28, 2006 an IRB jawan identified as Sheta Venuh allegedly shot Lumtiplung Kamei at Naga Bazaar with his service gun. The victim was shot on the right temple and rushed to Naga hospital Kohima in critical condition and later evacuated to Neurological Centre, Guwahati, Assam. He was reportedly under coma for a long time. He is still alive but with some physical problems, sources said.

After repeated hearings, the final argument was held today before the Additional District & Sessions Judge of Kohima. The Additional Public Prosecutor in his argument has pleaded for conviction of the accused, adding that the case is prima facie.

However, the defense counsel lashed out at the Investigating Officer (IO) for not producing evidences and seized items before the court during the process of trial. The counsel also argued that according to the IO the shot was from a Self Loading Rifle (SLR), but in reality the accused was holding a Light Machine Gun (LMG). This contradicts the report of the IO itself, the counsel stated. Basing on the argument, the defense counsel has pleaded the court to set the accused free. Nevertheless, the judge has reserved the judgment till September 18, 2009.
