‘Covid-19 death should not be stigmatized’

Dead body management training, demonstration held in Kohima village

Kohima, July 17 (MExN): With the initiative of District Task Force Kohima, the Kohima Village Task Force and the Health & Family Welfare Department, conducted training and demonstration for dead body management was held at Christ King Church, Kohima village on July 17.

Resource person, Dy CMO, H&FW, Dr Khriesilie Sachü said that Covid-19 death should not be stigmatized and families affected should not be discriminated. “The dead should be honoured and families should be allowed to pay their last respect to the deceased in a safe manner.”

A DIPR report stated that Dr Sachü elaborated on the updated guidelines of COVID-19 dead body management which was issued by the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland and stated that there is a minimal risk of spread of Covid-19 infection from a dead body if standard precautionary measures are followed However, misconceptions, stigma, and discrimination of the families remain when a person dies of Covid-19. 

Dr Sachü comprehensively highlighted on the preparation of a dead body in a healthcare Institution setting, the transportation process, the procedure at the burial site/crematorium. He also briefed on the additional sections on handling Covid-19 deaths in a home/community setting safety guideline for the caregiver of the deceased, and prevention of stigmatization and discrimination during Covid-19 deaths. 

He further stressed that during lockdown or period of travel restrictions, the family members, relatives, and friends of the deceased may be allowed to travel to attend funeral on special permission from the concerned district task force (origin and destination) with safety precautions and should follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour. 

Kohima Village Council Chairman, Helievi-o Solo  in his brief address applauded the Kohima village volunteers, the Kohima village scouts and guides for coming forward to accept the challenges at this trying time and tagged them  as the ‘Peoples warrior’ of the village.

Earlier, Convenor VTF, Dr Khriesatalie Yhome highlighted on the importance of the Dead Body Management at village level and sensitizing the people of Covid 19. Later, MO Botsa, Dr Atsei-ü Yhome and her team demonstrated the donning and doffing of different personal protective equipment (PPE) kit.
