CPO committee slams govt for delay in compensation

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 18 (MExN): The Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) committee on the 2 lane road, Phek has once again written to the Chief Secretary expressing concern at the delay in completing the compensation exercise as per the High Court’s order and timeline.

The CPO committee said that the Chief Secretary had had submitted the proposal in pursuant to the High Court Judgment and Order and requested the Ministry to look into the proposal for further allocation of fund and release of the same to the State Government. The CPO committee and PIL petitioners also went to the MORTH and presented the grievances of the victims to the central authority on May 31, 2023.

“Immediately thereafter, the Regional Office (MORTH) Guwahati wrote a letter, dated June 2, 2023, to the Chief Engineer, PWD, NH, Nagaland (receipt date- 06/06/2023) directing the State to submit a formal proposal...at the earliest for taking further necessary action in the matter,” the CPO informed.

However it said that the State Government is found “casually sleeping over a matter of great urgency for over 2 months now, counting days from the date of issue of June 2 letter.” The Court has clearly directed the Government of India (not the State Government) to pay the damaged compensation within 6 months time which had ended on July 30, 2023, the CPO reminded.

“Given this condition, the State Government dilly dallying the simple process of proposal submission till date, and downplaying the agonies and sufferings of the poor and restless victims of 10 years time is unimaginable and highly questionable. More so, deliberately dishonoring and non-complying with the Court Judgment and Order is an act of contempt,” it said.

While appreciating the Chief Secretary’s initiative, the CPO committee however stated that if this situation is allowed to continue, it may be forced to move for contempt of Court any time, “and any fallout thereafter will be only due to the callousness and irresponsibility of the authority.”
