Drawing from personal experiences as a fiction writer, Avinuo Kire today impressed upon that she has stopped using footnotes for local words or italicising them while telling stories unless it is absolutely. Speaking as the resource person for the session one—“Crafting a Story: How all the pieces fall together” of the three-day creative writing workshop for the Naga Languages held at Nagaland University, she said, “just let it blend into the narration.”

“This is all based on my core belief that readers are intelligent,” she said while also citing key practices that can help a writer write better. Writing, she added is ‘discipline’ and impressed upon the audience to “create a writing space for yourself and use that space whenever you write. This will subconsciously train your mind.”

Reiterating on the need to find that peak creativity time as a writer, she however emphasized that “what is most important is that one must possess the joy of writing.” “Once you have this pleasure from writing, the rest will fall into place,” she said.

In the meantime, she said, writing, particularly for Naga writers or indigenous writers is a complex exercise and further added that “regardless of what you're writing about, the past, present and future are interrelated.” In this regard, she asserted, “having knowledge of the past identity will only help you to write about the present and future more confidently.”

The session was chaired by Adenuo Shirat Luikham. Earlier, Professor, AK Mishra, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Kohima Campus, Meriema, Nagaland University graced the inaugural programme as the guest of honour while Dr Mimi Kevichüsa Ezung, HoD, Department of Tenyidie, Nagaland University delivered the welcome address and Metuo Liezietsu, Assistant Professor, Department of Tenyidie, Nagaland University proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Kethokhrienuo Belho, Assistant Professor, Department of Tenyidie, Nagaland University was the chairperson for the inaugural programme.

Two other sessions on “Confessional Poetry as a Metaphor of the Self and Other” and “Why Edit” were also held with Beni Yanthan and Easterine Kire as resource persons. Imlienla Imchen and Jano Sekhose chaired the two sessions respectively.

The three-day workshop is being organised by the Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of Letters, New Delhi in collaboration with the Department of Tenyidie, Nagaland University.
