CSU on issuing indigenous inhabitant certificate

Kohima, February 9: Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has constituted a committee for framing modalities on issuing of indigenous certificates to the Chakhesang inhabitants of Phek district.

The Union on accepting the committee reports/recommendations resolved and adopted to implement the same within Chakhesang jurisdiction in the 4th union assembly of CSU held during its 67th general conference at Khuza town.

In a letter addressed to the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) signed by CSU president, Thupukutho Lohe and general secretary, Seve Vadeo, the Union appealed the authority of CPO for consideration and approval and effective implementation of the resolution for the best interest of the community “so as to check and avoid malpractices in issuing of indigenous certificate to any individuals.”

The committee convenor Vevoyi and co-convenor Kuzhovesa Soho stated that the identity verification certificates for issuing of indigenous inhabitant certificate issued by VCC be accepted only when the certificate is countersigned by the Head GB, students’ union president, youth president and respective khel/clan GB as witnesses. The committee further demanded that all Chakhesang indigenous inhabitant certificates issued to non-Chakhesangs be canceled immediately.

The committee asked that the identity verification certificate for obtaining indigenous inhabitant certificate be signed by VCC, Head GB, students’ union president, youth president and applicant’s khel GB. The same certificate for obtaining indigenous inhabitant certificate, the committee report stated, shall not be issued to children of non-Chakhesang fathers as well as non- Christian children adopted by Chakhesang parents. However, women becoming Chakhesang tribe by marriage shall be eligible on production of an affidavit, it stated; adding the identity verification certificate for obtaining indigenous inhabitant certificate shall be issued to a person only if he/she is a permanent resident and belongs to Chakhesang tribe. A person from a forward tribe brought into Chakhesang tribe by marriage shall not be eligible for acquiring Backward Tribe certificate, it added.
