CSU, KCMT condemn alleged sexual assault of minor in Medziphema

Medziphema, July 12 (MExN): The Chakhroma Students' Union (CSU) and the Kuki Community Medziphema Town (KCMT) have strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl in Medziphema and demanded strict action against the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In a statement, the CSU expressed shock over the alleged assault, which reportedly took place on July 7, and described crimes of a sexual nature against children as among the gravest violations of human dignity and fundamental rights.

The union alleged that the accused, identified as Paominlun Gangte, a resident of Maova village, was arrested by the police following the incident.

Welcoming the prompt action by the police, CSU expressed confidence that the investigation would be conducted in a fair, impartial and time-bound manner and that the case would be pursued diligently to ensure justice for the minor survivor.

The union urged authorities to invoke and rigorously enforce the provisions of the POCSO Act, 2012, along with all other applicable laws, so that anyone found guilty through due process is held fully accountable.

CSU also appreciated the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and officials concerned for their prompt intervention and efforts in ensuring the child's protection, care and access to necessary support services in accordance with the law.

Expressing solidarity with the survivor and her family, the union appealed to the public to respect the child's privacy and dignity while allowing the legal process to take its course. It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children from all forms of abuse and called on society to work collectively towards ensuring a safe environment for every child.

In a separate statement, the Kuki Community Medziphema Town (KCMT) also condemned the alleged incident, describing it as inhuman and heinous.

The organisation stated that the accused had no place within the community and appealed to the administration and competent authorities to strictly enforce the provisions of the POCSO Act and other applicable laws against him.

KCMT also prayed for the victim's speedy recovery and for strength and comfort for the child's family.
