CSU to block movement of Govt vehicles, NHIDCL and contractor along NH-29

Kohima, May 11 (MExN): The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has announced an indefinite blockade on the movement of NHIDCL, its contractor M/S Ratna Infrastructure Project Pvt. Ltd, and all Government-registered vehicles along the NH-29 stretch, specifically the Chakhabama-Kikruma Package-II section, starting 6 AM on May 12.

The decision comes after what the CSU described as the “miserable failure” of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and its executing agency to meet the Union’s demands, despite a reasonable timeframe of over six months—from October 16, 2024, to May 11, 2025.

According to the CSU, both agencies failed to fulfil their commitments, resulting in immense inconvenience to commuters and the public.
‘Despite the ultimatum issued on May 2 and the peaceful protest held on May 10, the response from NHIDCL and M/S Ratna was appalling and irresponsible,’ it stated.

Thus, CSU said it was compelled to take further action and directed all stakeholders to comply with the blockade. “Any incident arising hereafter will be the sole responsibility of NHIDCL,” it cautioned.

USSC extends solidarity

Meanwhile, the United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has extended its “firm solidarity” with the CSU, calling for immediate and serious cognisance by NHIDCL of the issues raised.

In a letter addressed to the Executive Director of NHIDCL’s Regional Office in Kohima, the USSC commended CSU’s leadership for highlighting the deteriorating condition of the road.

It noted that the Chakhabama–Kikruma road is not only crucial for the Chakhesang region but also serves as a vital lifeline for Kiphire district, enabling movement, trade, education, and access to healthcare.

The USSC expressed hope that NHIDCL would demonstrate its commitment by prioritising the timely and quality completion of the project for the greater good of the region.
