With severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' making landfall and expected crossing of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by midnight of Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ weather warning for Nagaland on May 27, as well as an orange alert on May 28.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on May 27 and 28, as per the IMD forecast issued in an evening update at 9 PM.

The forecast also suggests a likelihood of widespread rainfall in the region, including Nagaland, until June 1.

However, despite an earlier forecast of widespread rainfall, actual rainfall was observed only at isolated places in Nagaland on May 26 between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, according to IMD data.

Meanwhile, the forecast for May 27 in Nagaland indicates, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls very likely at isolated places.”

The intensity was downgraded to “Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places” on May 28 and 29. On May 28, the IMD forecasted a likelihood of “Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.”

However, earlier in the day, an update from IMD Regional Met Centre Guwahati issued a ‘Red Alert’ (Take Action) warning for Nagaland on May 27 and 28.

An IMD bulletin on Cyclonic Storm Remal issued on Sunday also provided “Impact & Action” recommendations due to very heavy rainfall/extreme falls expected in Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura during May 26-28.

Cyclone Remal was expected to cross Bangladesh and WB coasts with max wind speed of 110-120 kmph.
