19 years old David Rutsa from Nagaland recently won the North East India Beatbox Online Championship 2020 in a tough battle among talented beatboxers in North East India.

David, who performs under the stage name ‘Coffee’, hails from Kohima and is currently a 1st semester student at Capital College Kohima. Rutsa is a well known beatboxer among the growing beatboxing community in Nagaland. He also came in 2nd at the Top Acts Finale 2020, in Kohima.

“I started beatboxing about 4 years ago. I saw the Famous viral Naga Beatbox video and I knew that I had to learn it too,” says David Rutsa.

Beatboxing for Rutsa began with a mindset 'to sound cool in front of my friends', however, it is now an artform which 'became so much to me as I began to know more about it'. For Rutsa, Beatboxing has a whole lot of different music genres, styles, grooves, flow, and vibe. “This art form to me is something very important, it defines what I am capable of. It's a place where I can find my positive side, a place where I can create my own music without any instruments, without any  restrictions. Just the Beatbox language,” says Rutsa.

The young beatboxer considers winning the North East India Online Championship as 'something really big'  the championship witnessed the participation of many skilled beatboxers from the different states in the North East. “It was a very tough battle as I had to battle and beat many skilled beatboxers round by round to reach the final to win the title. This battle was a very legendary battle as it was the first ever North East India Beatbox battle and was supported by Swissbeatbox, the biggest beatbox community in the world,” adds Rutsa.

Beatboxing, a growing art form in Nagaland as well as the country, has witnessed young Nagas picking up the art with passion in recent years.

Rutsa considers the beatbox community in Nagaland as 'really big and positive' with beatboxers trying their best to promote this artform. “The founders of the community Zonnimong and Otto does a lot for the community. Yanpvuo has been helping us a lot. He has been supporting us and he was the one who had organized the whole Northeast Battle,” mentions Rutsa.

In Nagaland, State Championships are held every year with the level of talent and skills getting higher each year.

“The Nagaland community is one the very respected community in the North East zone and also to many other other zonal communities,” considers Rutsa.

In the near future, Rutsa believes that more beatboxers from Nagaland will achieve professionalism and soon be able to make Nagaland as one of the biggest beatbox community in India. “I have hopes that the beatbox events here may have the potential to be able to be one of the biggest events here in India,” concludes the young beatboxer.
