Dimapur, February 17 (MExN):  The Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) in collaboration with National Domestic Workers Movement Nagaland Region commemorated the ‘Day of Hope’ on February 17 with the theme ‘Together towards gender equality.’

On the occasion, resource person and advocate, Nikita Engheepi emphasised on gender equality stating that it was the need of the time. She shared that gender inequality starts from childhood with various classifications such as associating the colour blue with boys and pink with girls; preference given to boys over girls in terms of education, etc. In this connection, she noted that the society, the family, and the community were responsible for creating such differences and said that changes have to be made ‘from our own kitchen.’

According to a press release, Sr Pramila, UFS, maintained that there are numerous instances of children, particularly the girl child, who have been terminated in the womb and are denied their God-given right to live happily and peacefully.

‘Today as we gathered together here, we appeal and call for gender equality and equal opportunity for all. We urge the parents to give them Hope, we urge the male children to respect and love their female siblings who too have right to live, hope and enjoy equal life’s opportunity as human beings,’ she said while appealing to the concerned authorities to uphold the same principle of equal right, equal opportunity for all.

Meanwhile, CRM member Chandini expressed her view on gender equality and said that the society needs to be honest and work on changing the social attitude towards women. Stressing on education as a door to many new opportunities for women, she also viewed that proper education should also be imparted to men and ‘then there will be no question of gender inequality.’ For full gender equality in India, both men and women must work together and bring positive changes in the society, she said while calling on each person not to discriminate or allow themselves to be discriminated.

As part of the day, different cultural programmes including a play on gender equality were conducted. There were 260 participants comprising both CRM Members, SHG members, ANDWU members and the leaders, the release stated.
