DCs and DNOs sensitized on disaster management

KOHIMA, JUNE 15 (DIPR): The Chief Secretary of Nagaland, Lalhuma, IAS, held a meeting with Deputy Commissioners and District Nodal Officers today at the Zonal Council Hall where agendas for various disaster managements were discussed.

Saying that disaster in any form is un-announced and occurs without any warning, the Chief Secretary urged upon the officers not to be complacent as far as disaster is concerned.

Lalhuma said no foolproof disaster protection mechanism has been evolved and that there should be deep rooted knowledge about the various types of disasters. He stressed on the need to be watchful about things happening in neighbouring States as it can affect all. 

Stresisng the need for effective communication during disasters, Lalhuma observed that District Headquarters can have equipments such as a sirens, which can play a vital role in alertness amongst citizens. He specially stressed on the important roles played by Deputy Commissioners in the District and urged them to be well prepared as team leader of the districts.

Referring to preparedness in case of disaster, Lalhuma said that casualty rate is calculated by the level of preparedness adding that the better people are equipped, the less the casualties. He said that local materials, man-power and facilities should be tailored to make the best use of traditional skills and knowledge during disaster.

The resource persons for the programme included Pradep Jena, Disaster Risk Management Team Leader, UNDP, Orissa, Choten Lama, Consultant N E Region UNDP and Akshaya Kr. Biswal, Programme Associate N E Region UNDP.

Those who attended the programme included Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner Nagaland, T N Mannen and Deputy Commissioners of all the districts and nodal officers.
