Zunheboto, July 22 (MExN): Amid prevailing heavy rainfall and reported incidents of landslides and road blockages, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Zunheboto has urged residents to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant, while emergency relief has been provided to five families affected by recent landslides in Zunheboto town.
In a public advisory issued on July 20, the DDMA and District Administration warned of heightened risks of flash floods and waterlogging in various parts of the district.
Residents were advised to stay away from landslide and mudslide-prone areas, steep slopes, unstable embankments, low-lying areas, riverbanks and flooded locations. They were also cautioned against approaching or crossing active landslides, mudslides or other unstable areas.
The advisory called for limiting non-essential travel during periods of heavy rainfall and avoiding travel at night. Where travel is unavoidable, commuters were advised to exercise extreme caution on vulnerable roads due to the continuing risk of falling rocks and debris.
People were further advised to avoid fishing, swimming, picnics, camping or lingering near rivers, swollen streams, overflowing drains and large trees, and not to cross flooded roads, streams or culverts with strong water flows.
The DDMA also asked residents to remain alert to signs of ground instability, including cracks in the ground, unusual rumbling sounds, tilting trees or poles, and sudden changes in water clarity or flow in nearby streams.
Residents were urged to follow official weather forecasts and advisories issued by the District Administration, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other competent authorities, and to report landslides, flooding, road blockages, fallen trees or persons in distress to the nearest administrative office, police station or DDMA Emergency Control Room.
Meanwhile, on July 22, the DDMA provided emergency relief funds to five families affected by recent landslides in different parts of Zunheboto town.
The beneficiaries were Livino Yeptho of Amiphoto Colony and Tsughato Sumi, Hevukhu, Ato and Bokato of Khuwaboto Colony.
The assistance was handed over to family members by Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Dharam Raj at the Deputy Commissioner’s Chamber.
