KOHIMA SEPT 12 (MExN): The Nagaland University today organized a debate competition with the theme ‘The Youth is more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in India’ under the banner All India Universities Action on Aids, at the Conference Hall, Kohima Campus. Altogether seven colleges, Alder College, Kohima College, Baptist College, Mount Olive College of Kohima and Japfü Christian College, Kigwema and Patkai Christian College. There were seven speakers for the motion and four speakers against the motion. Each speaker was given 5 minutes to speak and an additional 30 seconds as grace period was given.
Kopele Mero from Alder College was adjudged the best speaker while Abraham Sangtam of Baptist College, Kohima awarded the second prize. All the participants were given certificates for their participation. The two best speakers selected today will be representing Nagaland at the Inter-University Zonal Meet, to be held on the 20-23 Sept.’05 at the Vidyasagar University, Midnapur, Kolkata. The University itself will sponsor them.
Thejao Vihienuo, Registrar, NU in his exhortation asserted that there is nothing as valuable as the power of knowledge and as important as the power of thinking. “Intelligence alone can’t help. Intelligence can be hereditary but our thinking can be trained” he said.
Prof. S.K Gupta, Dean, School of Humanities & Education chaired the event. The Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. Fr. Sebastian, Head, Dept. of English, pointers on debate rules by Prof. G. T Thong (Moderator) Head, Dept of Geology while the Vote of thanks was offered by Dr. Ben Lotha, Dept. of History & Archeology. The panel of Judges was Dr. Taku, Medical officer, Dr Fr. Sebastian, Head Dept. of English and Dr. Buno Liegise, Dean of Students’ Welfare.
The Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi has launched a massive programme to create awareness on HIV/AIDS among the youth under the banner UNIVERSITIES ACTION ON AIDS (UNAAIDS) during 2005-2006. Two more contests are to be held i.e. Poster Competition on the theme ‘HIV/AIDS’ and Essay competition on ‘The Role of Youth in combating HIV/AIDS’ on the 20th of this Month. The selected candidates will participate in the Inter-University /Zonal/National Level Contests. Both these contests will be held at the University Conference Hall, Kohima itself.
