Dimapur, July 3 (MExN): Now veterans who have served in the Indian Army would, apart from the perks of service, be given “Decent Last Rites”. “Decent Last Rites” is a scheme aimed at providing decent last rites to all the veteran security personnel including their widows as a token of gratitude and acknowledgement to their services rendered to the nation while in the Indian Army.
The scheme was launched in Nagaland on June 30 by Lt General AS Jamwal, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Adjutant General, in Kohima. The scheme is being launched all over the country according to a PIB, Defense Wing release received here.
The basic concept of the “Decent Last Rites” scheme is based on CSD (Canteen Stores Department) where a veteran is dependent, the PIB release informed while stating that an organization is specifically being created from within own resources to monitor the welfare of each veteran attached to a particular canteen and to ensure that the veterans gets a decent and honorable funeral. Towards this effect, a database of all the veterans will be maintained including their residence and telephone numbers.
In the event of demise of a veteran, ADLR staff would coordinate all the arrangement of the last rites on behalf of the Army in consultations with the next of kin and as and when required. They will also lay a wreath on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff to honor the departed veteran.
The scheme would go a long way to boost the morale of all the veterans and assure them that the Army is there till the end keeping up with the age-old tradition of brotherhood and camaraderie, the PIB release added.
