Mon, July 19 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has urged the Nagaland Government to declare an emergency in Mon district and initiate immediate relief and restoration measures, stating that the district has experienced a “catastrophe” following incessant rainfall.
According to the KU, heavy rainfall has caused widespread devastation across the district, washing away buildings and houses and blocking roads connecting villages and subdivisions.
The Union stated that the death toll has reached nine, with four bodies recovered and search operations underway for five others. The number of other missing persons is yet to be ascertained, it added.
Around 150 households have reportedly been displaced across the district, while livestock losses remain unaccounted for. Electricity, communication and water supply have also been disrupted, the KU stated.
It further reported flooding in low-lying areas, including Naginimora, Upper and Lower Tiru and Tizit, causing immense hardship to residents. The Union claimed that Mon district has been “totally cut off,” with road connectivity to several subdivisions and villages blocked and some areas completely inaccessible.
The KU said it held an emergency meeting with the District Administration and urged it to take stock of the destruction across Mon district and promptly submit a detailed report to the higher authorities.
It also called for the setting up of rehabilitation sites and immediate relief assistance to affected households and individuals. The Union further sought urgent clearance and restoration of roads, noting that key lifelines and connectivity to subdivisions and villages have been disrupted.
The KU appealed to the State Government to deploy emergency machinery, including JCBs, across all subdivisions of Mon district to facilitate the immediate restoration of roads and communication during the monsoon season.
It also urged the government to provide assistance to the next of kin of the deceased without further delay.
