Newmai News Network Imphal | November 22 Union Minister of Defence, Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the 10-day tourism festival of the State, Manipur Sangai Festival - 2018 at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal East district on Wednesday evening. Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function held at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre in Imphal, Sitharaman said that Manipur is the ‘gem’ among the states of the country. Manipur is such a beautifully endowed state where one can find the unique freshwater Loktak Lake, natural beauty and wildlife, old aged culture and traditions, varieties of exotic foods etc, she added. Appreciating the culture and tradition of Manipur, Sitharaman said that Manipur people have not forgotten their old aged tradition, seen much alive till now. Manipuri dance and music is unbelievably soul comforting, she added. She highlighted that Manipuri women have been taking constructive role towards building a better society, and added the Manipuri women’s market is undoubtedly showcasing women’s power to the world. While delivering her Presidential address, Governor of Manipur Dr. Najma Heptulla said that Manipur Sangai Festival is now recognized as a National event and has brought the cultural flavour of Manipur to center stage. She continued that the Festival provides an opportunity to showcase various aspects of our rich traditions and culture, besides promoting the handloom and handicraft products. Governor said that around 500 varieties of medicinal plants and around 600 varieties of orchids are available in the State. Ima market is the world’s only all-women run market place, she added. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that Manipur Sangai Festival has evolved into people’s festival. Biren stated that Sumo Wrestling, Go-Karting, Muay Thai and indigenous games of Manipur will be major attractions of this year’s edition. The present government has been at the forefront in promoting tourism through festivals and fairs besides developing tourist infrastructures, added the Chief Minister. Prior to the inaugural function, Union Minister of Defence inspected various stalls being opened at Hapta Kangjeibung. A 60 minute choreography presentation “Eikhoi Amatani - Punna Chatminnasi Chaokhat Maikei Pangna” and a folk and tribal fusion song were also showcased. Cherry Blossom Festival begins at Mao Gate Imphal, November 22 (NNN): The three-day Manipur Cherry Blossom cum Flower Festival Mao Gate began today at Mao Gate in Senapati district. The event is being organised as part of the Sangai Festival 2018 under the theme ‘Exploring Nature’s Wonder.’ Manipur Minister Works, Power, RD&PR, IPR, Administrative Reforms, Textiles, Commerce & Industry, Government of Manipur Thongam Biswajit Singh inaugurated the Festival as part of the Sangai Festival. Addressing the inaugural function at Mao Gate, Biswajit said, "If we have faith and belief in one another, we would have good relations." He then said that the present government is the peoples’ government, and the understanding we see among the people today is all because of the efforts of the government and the people. "There will be misunderstandings and disappointments; however, the present government firmly believes that instead of fighting, if we can discuss over it, and bring better things for the society", he added. Delivering the welcome address, Minister PHE, Printing & Stationery, Government of Manipur Losii Dikho thanked the government led by Chief Minister N.Biren Singh for observing the Cherry Blossom Festival as part of the Manipur Sangai Festival and for celebrating the festival with the entire State. He said “God has made Manipur a beautiful place.” Biswajit had also opened the inaugural plaque of the festival at the start of the function.
