Delay in Indo-Naga political settlement impacting common people, says NTC

Urges PM Modi to settle matter on priority

Dimapur, February 16 (MExN): The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has underscored that the problems and backlash from the delay in settling the Indo-Naga political issue would impact the common people.

The council, on Wednesday, submitted a representation to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that “The only task left at the moment is for the Government of India (GoI) to take a call for signing the agreement between the Naga negotiators and GoI,” as the negotiations officially culminated on October 31, 2019.

“However, the assured political settlement is still evasive for the last two and a half years even after the conclusion of the political dialogue. The longer the matter of settlement for a political solution is delayed the more problems will surface as a result of which the brunt of the backlash always fall and impact the common people for no fault of theirs,” the NTC’s representation stated.

Stating that the people are anxiously expecting the “promise you made to the Nagas for early solution of the Naga Political issue,” the NTC impressed upon Prime Minister Modi to take up the matter and resolve the long pending political solution as promised.

“Exertions of time, energy, efforts and resources have been put in to nurture the assured political solution process which is required to be respected by all concerned at all times,” the NTC stated.

Further, it pointed out that in the early part of the 2018 general election in Nagaland, the Naga people wanted for “Solution but not Election” but the GoI’s “Election for solution” stance convinced the Nagas and the polls were held.

However, after the election, “the sugar coated word ‘Solution before Christmas,’ and ‘as Christmas gift’ could further hoodwink the innocent people of the State of Nagaland in particular and the Nagas in general. The promises are yet to be fulfilled till date,” the representation stated.

In this context, the NTC asserted that the time “much uncomplainingly awaited times are all over, excepting the commitment of all Political Parties to the people that the ‘elected members are prepared to pave way as and when an inclusive, honourable and acceptable solution arrived at.’

The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) therefore, urged the PM to use wisdom and take up the matter on top priority basis and resolve the decades old Naga political solution in a manner that is honourable and acceptable, without any further delay.
