Dimapur, October 25 (MExN): Nagas in Delhi today took out a rally at the Jantar Mantar demanding quickening early solution to the Indo-Naga political issue. The rally was themed by a query “Isn’t 13-year of peace talk long enough a period to have an outcome?”
The protestors held the Government of India solely responsible for infringements, attempts to ‘derail the peace processes’ or failing to show political will. Hundreds of Nagas turned up for the rally, it was informed. Other students’ bodies including Manipur Students’ Association, Delhi and Democratic Students’ Union and members from various NGOs participated to show their solidarity. Later, a memorandum was submitted to the Prime minister of India, said a statement from the Naga students. The organizers blamed the Government of India for ‘failing’ to show ‘political will’.
They said that the peace-talk between the “Government of India and the NSCN” has been vividly marred by the “failure of the former to show political will, urgency and decisiveness to arrive at an honorable political solution even after the Nagas have proposed a model of solution in the form of special federal relationship with GoI.”
There is a contradiction deeply rooted in the action of the Government of India, the organizers said. “While claiming that it recognizes the unique history and situation of the Nagas and acknowledges the political nature of the Naga issue for which the peace talk is indispensable, the Government of India has constantly acted in utter contrary to what it grandiloquently expressed,” the statement said.
The students also blamed the Government of India that it “constantly attempted to derail the peace process at critical junctures through well-calculated provocations and infringements.” The statement even claimed that the people “continue to struggle and believe” and that the decades old Indo-Naga problem can be solved through political negotiation.
The statement said “Nonetheless, the constant meticulous schemes of the Government of India to derail the peace process cannot be but construed as taking the patience of the Naga people for granted. The need of the hour is to fully realize that an undiluted approach to the peace process aim at resolving the vexed Naga political issue is to the interest of both the sides.”
