Dimapur, March 21 (MExN): Observing various Naga organizations’ expressing opposition to delimitation/adjustment as nothing but inviting discrepancies, the United Sangtam Likhum Bumji is for implementation of the delimitation Act 2002.
The USLB made clear that the exercise should be on population basis and if status quo is maintained there will be discrepancies between districts. “It has been observed that the news items in the local dailies in regard to opposing of the delimitation/readjustment from different tribal organizations and the government’s stand on status quo is nothing but inviting discrepancies,” stated the USLB through its president R Tsapikiu Sangtam.
Citing the instance of Kiphire, the USLB pointed out that as per the 2001 census, the district’s population is 10, 1432 so it is entitled to have three assembly seats to impact equal representation.
“If the delimitation is to be done based on the 2001 census and we are to follow as per the Indian Election Commission’s guidelines, it is crystal clear that delimitation should be done according to population wise” the USLB observed.
The USLB appealed to Nagaland’s political leaders, tribal organizations and bureaucrats not to “underestimate” the “weaker districts” by opposing the Delimitation Act 2002 but accept its implementation “and do justice once and for all.”
