Delink separate HC issue from political negotiations: NBA

DIMAPUR, MARCH 3 (MExN): The Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) has asked the State Government as well as the Central Government to expedite the establishment of a separate High Court for Nagaland and to “delink this matter from the ongoing political negotiations.”

“The Bar is of the opinion that uncertainties in the ongoing political negotiations should not result in further delays for the State to have its own High Court,” a press release from the NBA stated, following a meeting of the association’s executive council on March 3.

For the past 60 years, it noted that the Advocate General for the State has been appointed from outside the State. The NBA resolved that the State Government must appoint someone from the legal fraternity in the State to the said Constitutional Office. “The unanimous opinion on this subject was that it would be unfair, unjust and a slur upon the legal fraternity in the State, if yet again, the Office of the Advocate General is proposed to be filled by a Lawyer from outside the State, ignoring the members of the legal fraternity in the State,” it added.
