
DIMAPUR, MARCH 10 (MExN): A demonstration programme on maize cultivation was jointly conducted by KVK & ATMA at DAO, conference hall, Mokokchung on March 8 with Quality Protein Maize (QPM). A press note stated that Farmers Interest Groups (FIGs) consisting of 3-4 members mainly women from eight different villages participated in the programme. QPM seeds (Variety HQPM-1) was distributed among the farmers as per their requirement for the demonstration programme along with an Agricultural Farming Handbook published by ATMA, Mokokchung.
The note stated that due to the “satisfactory performance and wide adaptability of QPM”, it was determined to demonstrate the new technology in order to create awareness and promote the high yielding and nutritional maize variety. It added that this hybrid variety maize has higher yield potential and shorter crop duration. It also contains nearly twice the quantity of essential amino acid, lysine and tryptophan as compared to other maize varieties.
To achieve better demonstration results on the new variety, Samuel Sangtam, SMS, KVK briefed the attendees on cultivation practices focusing on major factors like field preparation, time of sowing, method of sowing, critical stages of water management, weed management and harvesting.
