Speaking on the occasion, Nukhu asserted that he has “ambitious plans” to modernize the colleges in Nagaland and bring changes to the higher education system.

In order to take stock of the current status of colleges, Nukhu had initiated an extensive tour to some of the state’s colleges recently; the second leg of this tour will start on April 16.

Nukhu said that he wanted to see proper infrastructure put in place within two or three years. He also announced the upgrading of college libraries, stating that the students will be prepared to study more if good libraries are provided. The Parliamentary Secretary stressed on the need to create a “congenial atmosphere” in the form of providing hostels in both government and private colleges.

Nukhu called upon the students to work hard with sincerity.  He also asked them to make the best use of their talent and excel in the different fields.

Regretting that although Naga youth possess ability and potential, he said, they fail to put their effort to the expected extent. In this, he urged upon them to work hard.

Reminding the students of the competitive world, Nukhu said laziness has no place in this present society and asked the students to come forward and meet various challenges. In commemoration of the 25 years of the Peren Government College, Nukhu released its souvenir.

Peren Government College Principal Dr. S. Alemmeren Jamir stated that the Peren Government College was started on April 13, 1987 as a private institution, later taken over by the state government on February 1, 2006. He said the college is marching towards the goal of excellence.

Also speaking on the occasion, Dr. Toshiba Echa, Director of Higher Education said the toppers of Class 12 during 2012-13 in arts, commerce & science streams will get an opportunity to visit the NASA centre and the White House. In 2011-12, laptops were offered to the toppers.

Minister for Planning & Coordination, Evaluation, Geology & Mining, T. R. Zeliang, penned in the college souvenir, “The Peren Government College since its inception is trying its best to provide quality education to the students especially for the economically weaker section in spite of limited infrastructure and other basic amenities.”

“The college has been providing yeoman service to the district by catering to the needs of those students who could not afford to go out of the district for further studies,” penned F.P. Solo, Commission & Secretary department of higher & technical education.

A new college building, staff quarters, playground and other facilities are being constructed at the New District Headquarters.
