Dimapur, June 7 (MExN): The Department of Agriculture has begun taking precautionary measures to curb rodent threat to food grains in the State. A rodent management awareness campaign has started across the eleven districts of the State. The district level campaign for Dimapur was held today at the ATMA training hall. The inaugural session was attended by Joint Director of the Agriculture department, I Panger, who delivered the keynote address. The technical session was conducted by master trainers Jacob Yanthan, SDO (Store), Dimapur and Bendanglila, APP Dimapur.
In his address, Panger said that the rodent infestation time is approaching and, therefore, the department has decided on taking precautionary measures by educating farmers in the State. He said that in the past, the state has faced massive destruction of food grains by rodents especially in Jalukie area under Peren district. He also pointed out that rodents not only destroy food grains but also pose a risk for humans, as they venture into homes carrying various harmful diseases.  He said farmers need to know proper techniques to kill rodents and prevent them from multiplying.
Panger urged the farmers to work united to control the menace, adding that the department alone cannot prevent an epidemic. He said that despite huge land under cultivation in Dimapur district, the production does not meet required standards and people are still buying food grains from the market. Therefore, he said farmers need to protect their crops from pests and rodents. He further urged the famers to pay close attention to the resource persons during the technical session for better understanding of the campaign.
The rodent management awareness campaign is a centrally sponsored “plant protection” scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture. This campaign has been going on for the last three years. Due to massive bamboo flowering in Nagaland in the last few years, the government has been imparting awareness and conducting training on rodent management to farmers.
