A Dialysis Unit at Hezukhu Memorial District Hospital, Zunheboto was officially inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj, IAS on June 4.

In his address, DC Zunheboto Dharam Raj, IAS emphasised that “health is wealth” and cautioned that chronic illnesses like cancer and kidney failure could severely impact an individual’s finances. Highlighting the rising cases of cancer and kidney-related diseases, “With the inauguration of this dialysis unit, we hope to alleviate the financial burden faced by many citizens of Zunheboto.”

He also added that equipped with three dialysis machines, this unit can cater to three patients at a time. “We are grateful for this development, and the district administration stands ready to assist further in the progress of our healthcare services,” he said.

Earlier, chairing the inaugural function, Dr Shikato Sema, Senior Medical Officer (SMO) highlighted the significance of the unit in improving the quality of life for kidney failure patients. He explained that kidney failure is primarily caused by uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes mellitus has been a growing concern in the district.

“A time may come when many will have to face this condition,” he observed, urging the public to manage their blood pressure and diabetes to prevent kidney failure.

Dr Sema also mentioned that while the hospital is equipped with modern technologies, trained technicians, and medical staff, the major challenge remains the availability of sufficient water.

Delivering the keynote message, Dr S Kuotsutho, Medical Superintendent, said, “We are witnessing a significant milestone in our hospital. This is not just a room filled with equipment, but a place of hope and life-sustaining care. Chronic kidney disease is not a choice; for many, dialysis is essential for survival. With this facility, we aim to provide better and more compassionate healthcare.”

The dialysis unit will be managed by a trained technician, nurses, and doctors, with oversight from specialist physicians, ensuring a high standard of patient care.

A vote of thanks was delivered by Dr K Akaho Sema, SMO, who expressed gratitude to Indian Oil Aarogyam for sponsoring the initiative. He noted that many patients from the district had previously been forced to travel to other areas for dialysis due to a lack of local facilities. “Now, with the availability of this unit in our own district, we can help more people and ease their financial burdens,” he added, appealing for continued public support and cooperation.

Earlier in the programme dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Kughavi V. Chishi, Pastor, NCRC Sumi Zunheboto followed by DC Dharam Raj Inaugurating the unit.

The event was attended by representatives of Sumi Hoho, Sumi Totimi Hoho, Sumi Kukami Kuqhakulu, Zunheboto Town Council, Zunheboto Area Public Organisation, Zunheboto GBs Association, NDPP 35 A/C, Sumi Youth Organisation, and medical staff from the district hospital.
