
DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 21 (MExN): A total of 618 criminal cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special & Local Laws (SLL) across the three districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland from January to December 21, 2024, according to the annual crime report released by the Office of the Commissioner of Police.
577 individuals were arrested in connection with these cases as of December 21, the report indicated. The data, which includes crimes under both the IPC and SLL, highlighted a detailed breakdown of the registered cases, arrests made, and significant seizures, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.
The total number of criminal cases registered under the IPC stands at 445, with 318 persons arrested. Among the most notable crimes, theft emerges as the highest category, with 206 cases registered and 75 arrests made, 62 cases of criminal breach of trust followed by extortion with 47 cases, kidnapping and abduction with 21 cases.
Other IPC cases registered include 6 cases of murder, 9 cases of attempt to murder, 2 rape cases, 9 cases of robbery, 11 cases of cheating, 16 case of causing death due to negligence, 12 cases on incidences of rash driving, 8 cases of forgery, 12 cases of burglary among others.
NLTP Act – Liquor Prohibition
The Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act continues to be a major area of enforcement. A total of 73 cases were registered under this Act, with 81 arrests made. Law enforcement seized a total of 7,661.67 litres of various brands of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL).
Crimes under SLL
A total of 173 cases were registered under various Special & Local Laws, resulting in 259 arrests. The NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) saw the highest number of cases, with 51 cases registered and 116 arrests made.
The police have seized substantial amounts of illegal narcotics including-Heroin/Brown Sugar: 5 kg & 488.55 grams (monetary value: Rs 1,646,565), Ganja: 446 kg (value: Rs 535,200), Opium: 8 kg 702 g (value: Rs 8,702,000), Crystal Meth: 348 g (value: Rs 3,480,000) and Cash seizure of Rs 2, 74, 062.
Other major categories include 32 cases, 48 arrests under Arms Act, 13 cases and 11 arrests under POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences), 2 cases under Explosives Act and 1 case under ITA Act.
Key Crime Trend: 2024 vs 2023
The overall crime trend in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts has shown a downward trajectory, particularly in key categories such as extortion, alcohol and narcotics-related offenses.
In 2023, according to the yearly crime report released by CP Dimapur, a total of 712 persons were arrested and 814 cases registered under Indian Penal Code and Special & Local Laws as compared to 618 cases registered and 577 arrests made in 2024.
Under the NDPS Act, in 2023, a total of 88 cases were registered and 149 arrests made while in 2024, there were 51 cases registered and 116 arrests made. Under NLTP Act, 126 cases were registered leading to the arrest of 129 persons in 2023 while in 2024, a total of 73 cases were registered with 81 arrests made.
