Dimapur, October 20 (MExN): The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Dimapur organized a Legal Awareness seminar during the Golden Jubilee celebration of Government Middle School / Government Primary School, Diphupar on October 18.


The seminar was held in the second session with teachers and students, a press release from DLSA stated.


Panel Lawyer Kekhriele-u Mezhu spoke on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill.  She underscored that the POCSO Act was enacted to protect the children from offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography with due regard for safeguarding the interest and well-being of children.


To combat rising cases of child sex abuse, the amendments to strengthen the POCSO Act also include death penalty for aggravated sexual assault on children, besides providing stringent punishments for other crimes against minors. 


Yambemo Ngullie spoke on cyber crime. He sensitized the students to keep oneself vigilant and aware when using social media or keep away from  fraud calls and threats through any form that involves a computer and a network. He said that such frauds or misuse of social media is punishable under cyber crime. He also stated that penalties and punishments in India are contained in the Information Technology Act, 2000.
