Liviana Aye of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, took the top position at the 3rd Dorians Society Spelling Bee 2024. A Class 8 student, Aye came out tops from a pool of 50 spellers from various schools, who competed in the spelling bee.

Ruhul Ahmed, Class 8, Cambridge School, Dimapur finished second, followed by Anyem Shakailem, Class 8, of Eklavya Model Residential School, Diphupar, in third place. The winners won cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 5000 and Rs 3000, respectively, along with certificates.

The inter-school spelling bee was open to students of Class 7 and 8 from schools in Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima. It was held at the Kingdom Culture Church hall, Dimapur. The spellers were from 25 schools, including one government middle school, with each of the competing schools sending two competitors.

The competition was presided over by two judges and two pronouncers. Each speller was given 2 minutes to spell words from the English dictionary with the option to request the word meaning, part of speech, etymology and an example of its usage/function in a sentence.

According to the Dorians Society, the primary objective of holding the spelling contest has been to promote healthy competition among students, while helping enhance command over vocabulary, besides serving as a launch pad to go on to compete in bigger stages.

The Dorians Society was founded in 1997 with a commitment to fostering positive change within the community. While initially concentrating on sports, the society has diversified its activities to encompass various social initiatives, including the spelling bee.
