“This location was once an eyesore for any passerby and it was like a mini dumping site but today it has been transformed into a new ambience with a beautiful uplift under the initiative of the DMC and The Better Dimapur,” said MLA & Advisor, Power, H Tovihoto Ayemi on September 4 after inaugurating Parkway at Golaghat Road, Dimapur opposite Hotel Sente.

He said the Parkway does not belong to the DMC simply because it took the initiative but that it belonged to the public and appealed them to treat the facility as their own with a sense of belongingness.

Acknowledging the sanitation workers for keeping the town clean on daily basis, Tovihoto, however, rued that by afternoon the town gets littered again by the public.

“The workers do their job of cleaning on daily basis but it is the public who litter here and there as soon as the town is cleaned,” he said and urged the public to use designated dustbins.

In this connection, Tovihoto also urged the GBs and colony councils to sensitize the people to use designated dustbins in their respective colonies rather than littering.

Further, Tovihoto also emphasized on the need to segregate various types of wastes at home before handing it over to the municipal authorities to ease the work of those involved in segregating wastes at the dumping site. “Not all wastes should necessarily be handed over to the DMC but there are certain wastes which we can manage at our own homes and we should try to do whatever is possible before passing the entire burden to the Municipality,” he added.

Tovihoto also appealed the public to sincerely pay nominal Residential Sanitary Tax to the DMC.

Time for ULB election

Stating that the Government of India was not releasing funds in the absence of an elected Municipal body, Tovihoto said it was time to have an elected body in the DMC in order to usher in bigger developmental projects.

Awareness on pre-paid meter

The Advisor for Power also said that proper awareness would be created amongst the masses before actual implementation of pre-paid power meter system. He appealed the public to continuously support the administration, police, DMC and other government agencies for betterment of the city.

Later, Tovihoto flagged off bike rally on cleanliness awareness.

During the programme, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo; DMC Administrator, Albert Ezung; SDO Civil (Sadar), Zubenthung Ngullie; Dimapur Sadar GB’s Union President, MY Ngullie and Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation President, Tsenthungo also addressed the gathering.
