Dimapur, March 26 (MExN): Minorities in Dimapur are feeling left out and ‘victimized’ even as the delimitation furor is on. Leaders and members from the non-ST communities including the Muslim Council, Bengali, Bihari and Marwari communities in Dimapur met on March 25 to discuss the delimitation proposal.
Anguish was expressed over what a press note from the meeting stated is inaccurate census and electoral rolls where the minorities ‘have been victimized to a great extent.’ It was found that the proposal was ‘numerically and geographically inclined’ ignoring the interest of the non-ST population, constitution about 11% of Dimapur. Even names of those who had been residents since 1963 do not figure in the rolls, it stated.
It also took note that Dimapur-1 which is the solitary general seat is now proposed to be renamed as 60 Dimapur South. “It has only ward no.7 and 8 of the old constituency of 11, 804 population now proposed to be clubbed with ST majority villages and colonies totaling 65, 473 population which goes against the letter and spirit of providing for the interests of the minorities in Nagaland” the note stated. The minorities have submitted a memorandum to the commission for redress of this anomaly.
