Dimapur | January 7 : Tedious and cumbersome as it may appear, the Dimapur Police today began an ambitious crackdown on vehicle theft and to address the discrepancies in the registration of motor vehicles. Every garage and service centre in Dimapur must maintain a log book or register. This must maintain data of all vehicles produced or kept in the garage for repair and replacement.
“The data must include the registration number, chassis number, engine number, make, model, type, colour and the details of the owner producing the vehicle for repair and replacement,” the Superintendent of Police , Dimapur informed.
Most people manning the garages in Nagaland, especially Dimapur are non-Nagas. This is a tricky question as a section of the customers who visit the garages may consider the direction trivial to follow. This would put the garage owners under stress as they would be facing the police heat. Today’s directive states that garages and service centres must visit the concerned police station on a daily basis and also obtain an ”endorsement” of the duty officer.
The directive means that replacement of chassis, engine or other major modification leading to drastic change in the outlook of the vehicle should be carried out only on production of valid documents from concerned authorities.
Another obvious attempt to check vehicle theft is the direction that, henceforth, any change in colour of the vehicle cannot be carried out without approval of the District Transport officials. Any change in colour must be reflected in the registration papers/documents.
On outlets making registration plates, jobs must not be taken unless the customers produce a valid registration certificate for which vehicle the registration plate is required.
“Vehicle owners/Customers producing vehicle for repair/modification to any garage/workshop and which is suspected to be stolen or required by the police must be reported to the nearest Police Station for verification at the earliest,” the order read in an obvious attempt to crack down on discrepancies that are allowed to pass by up until now.
The SP cautioned that non compliance of the order shall invite prosecution.
