Dimapur police form SIT to probe minor’s sexual assault

Dimapur, June 3 (MExN): A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted by Dimapur Police to investigate the case of sexual assault on a minor in Dimapur, with two persons arrested in connection with the matter, police said on Wednesday.

The SIT, headed by a senior police officer, was formed following the registration of a case under DMR WNPS Case No. 003/26 at the Dimapur Women Police Station on May 25, 2026, based on a formal First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the guardians of the minor victim.

The case has been registered under Sections 64(2)(f)(i)(m), 65(1), 71, and 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

“Given the extreme sensitivity of the matter,” the Dy Commissioner of Police (Crime)/PRO, Dimapur in a press release said, “a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted, headed by a senior Police Officer, to ensure a thorough and comprehensive investigation.”

Acting on statements recorded by the Investigating Officer, police arrested two accused individuals — O Watimeren Jamir (43), a resident of Lengrijan village, Dimapur, and Tsuktimongba Ao (37), a resident of Razaphe Industrial village, Dimapur.

Both accused were subsequently produced before the Court and have been remanded to police custody for rigorous interrogation, police said.

Dimapur Police has strongly urged the public and media platforms to strictly respect the privacy of the minor victim and to refrain from circulating any details, including name, age, tribe, address, school, photographs, or any other particulars which may directly or indirectly reveal the identity of the child.

The police has also cautioned that disclosure of a minor victim’s identity constitutes a serious criminal offence, punishable under Section 72 of the BNS, Section 23 of the POCSO Act, and Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act.

“The investigation is progressing rapidly, meticulously and in strict adherence to all procedural requirements,” the PRO said, adding, “every effort is being made to ensure the timely completion of the investigation and the submission of the Chargesheet without undue delay, with the objective of upholding due process and ensuring the fair and timely administration of justice.”

The case came to light on May 23 and a police complaint was subsequently filed on May 25. As initially reported by The Morung Express, the complaint was filed by the Chang Union Dimapur, on behalf of the victim.
