Dimapur: The General Reserve Police Station at the Railway Station, Dimapur could do with a few more Police personnel. Officer in charge of the Police Station, Atu Zhumvü, when contacted, said that an additional platoon of policemen is what the GRPS requires as of now.
Although the police personnel carry out routine frisking operations and apprehend wrongdoers from time to time, the haphazardly placed entry and exit points pose problems, said Zhumvü.
Moreover, lack of equipment is also a setback towards the proper dispensation of duties, he added.
He further informed that criminals were constantly deploying their cunning and ingenuity towards carrying out their illegal activities.
As a result, the Police need updated equipment and tools to tackle this menace, Zhumvü said. There are four railway tracks and at times three different trains stop concurrently at the Railway Station. At such chaotic times, the police personnel find it difficult to execute their duties efficiently, he said.
Criminals are continuously updating their techniques and of late have started employing women and children to traffic their drugs. Illegal and banned drugs enter Dimapur through the medium of rail transport while ganja brought in from Manipur is exported through trains that pass Dimapur Railway Station. Organized crime syndicates have been reported to be behind this illegal trade. Some godowns which stock ganja are reportedly located at the fourth, fifth and sixth mile areas of Dimapur.
The OC further hidhlighted the need for a bomb-pit in the proximity of the Railway station as a precautionary measure.
Stating that a bomb blast such as that of last year could occur again, he said that it was necessary to develop a system whereby early detection and disposal of bombs could be executed.
