One family had a close shave with death early this morning, narrowly escaping an avalanche of rocks at the unstable Chümoukedima stretch of NH 29, currently in the midst of a width expansion project.

According to the police, the rockslide occurred around 7:00 am about a kilometre away from the Chümoukedima police check post, towards Jharnapani.

There were three occupants in the car when it was caught as one segment of a cliffside caved in. The police said that the occupants of the Tuensang-bound car managed to get out and get to safety. The car was crushed.

As of 9:30 am, it was informed that the debris was partially cleared and single-lane/one-way traffic was enforced.
