Navanethem “Navi” Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2026 for promoting peace and international law. She is South African+Indian+woman+former justice of the International Criminal Court (ICC)+reputed Human Rights lawyer of par excellence. She received the prize for peace for the year-2026 for being a person who with exceptional courage and integrity paving the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order. This year’s laurate has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and perpetrators of genocides are prosecuted.
She is endowed with firm moral compass and thus committed to universal legal principles in a long legal career particularly specialising in criminal domain. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillai became a lawyer and relentless legal pioneer confronting deep-seated structural discrimination, segregation, division, and exclusion. A common thread that runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid. Appeared in such cases as a judge in some of the key international court cases of her time. A fearless advocate and judge who stood by her conviction within the domain of jurisprudence. She has never compromised on anything except to adhere to jurisprudence.
The prize signifies and adds the growing significance within which it enlarged the scope and impact of international law. Justice Navi Pillai has served as a judge in the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court (ICC). She also served as the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Right. Until recently she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Currently Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide.
In some of the historic international court case, she has shown her legal acumen, prowess, and prudence of law by preventing acts of war and violence. Navi Pillai has hugely contributed to strengthening the institutions of international law and bult it in such ways that these institutions could act like dikes to curb the powers of dictators and oligarchs. Further, she believed in the independence of these institutions comprised of expertise and steadfastness, so that those bulldozers would not cross their limits and made them to abide by the international laws and at any cost violate them to their personal gains and advantages.
Peace Prize by the Nobel Award Committee was instituted 125-years ag, with an overarching objective of resolving conflicts through international law – which undergirded the importance of peace in a global context of wars and conflicts. As envisioned, the Second World 11 (1939-45), other conflicts since then and now two major wars going on in our world. So, it was with long vision and total commitment this prize has been initiated. More importantly, the Nobel Peace Committee believes in the lasting peace could happen only when there are enough safeguards within the legal systems at the global levels. By having these international laws, the world would come to know who are the perpetrators and who are the victims, and so, those who violated should be punished. Though there were some anomalies, the International Courts of Law have brought the perpetrators culpable of those offences committed.
Despite having international organisations and institutions, we have been witnessing more conflicts and wars and the international diplomacy, dialogue, treaties, and legal mechanisms have hardly worked. What we are witnessing is more threats, violence, and warfare. In such fluid conditions, comity of nations and populations across the world have come to a realisation that international law is the only foundation that ought to be strengthened for a more peaceful world. And so, there are people who tend to get engaged in strengthening these institutions.
At the same time the world in which we live is facing a number of conflicts within and between countries. Never in the human history we have witnessed such wars and conflicts in the world at large now than ever before. Therefore, when we are confronted with existential challenges what is required is international law and committed judges who can openly defend the victims and come out with clarity those who abuse powers and authority. And yet, the international institutions and courts of law are under tremendous pressure and its institutions are under attack. Even then, Nobel Peace Prize reiterates and reminds us that the rule of law – national and international thus underpins the system that the comity of nations has set up to ensure peace and resolving conflicts in non-violent ways. It also underscores peace requires justice.
The world is filled with hatred, Islamophobia, genocides, abuse of power and authority, and to devour countries and its territories through conflicts and wars. There have been several attempts to undermine laws and human rights. There are leaders who think that “might is right”. And so, these brute dictators use tools and special armed forces to throttle the masses who protests and defies. The who pronounce the judgements justly and fairly are subjected to threats and sanctions. This is what the President of United States and Israel’s PM Netanyahu did when the ICC came out strongly against two leaders that include PM Netanyahu to be arrested.
It is in such a volatile context Justice Navi Pillai is commendable and needs our appreciation for her boldness and courage. She has demonstrated her commitments and resolve by pointing to the culprits to the world at large. Those who are daring and do not worry about power have been forthright in their vocations. She also brought to the fore the leaders of the nation-states to comply with the rule of law. She has also helped to define the relevant norms and legal principles. Rwanda is a classic case when she in her judgement said that the leaders of the nation-state including its military has committed crimes against humanity as well as genocide. Her influence in that judgement has been crucial and vital.
She continues to strengthen the independent tribunals and other institutions that are based on jurisprudence nationally and internationally. This is how she promoted peace, reconciliation, and justice across the world. She is an international legal luminary and a stalwart of international criminal justice. A person of deep commitment driven by justice alone. In such a context how can American President Donald Trump stake his claims for Nobel Peace Prize. Nobel Peace Committee according to Trump should have taken his version of stopping eight wars and be awarded eight gold medals. The world know that Trump is the perpetrator of wars and conflicts and through trans nationalism he thinks he could bring justice and peace. How could a perpetrator be given the Nobel Peace Prize which is antithetical and aberration?
