Dimapur | June 3

Several days after the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) had undertaken a joint initiative with a private firm to clear one of the dirtiest open drains at Midland colony, Dimapur, piles of garbage and waste materials re-emerged at the same site. One of the shop owners in the vicinity claimed that the workers had only managed to clear part of the wastes lying above the surface of the drain.

As a result of which the drainage was again inundated with waste as seen from the photos taken on June 3, defeating the whole purpose of the exercise. The DMC had also erected a banner notifying citizens not to throw waste into the drainage. However it was observed that due to the re-emergence of legacy waste, people had begun throwing fresh rubbish again.

The Morung Express had previously highlighted the condition of this drain. Residents of the area stated that the accumulation of waste had been piling up for several years without any action from the authorities earlier. This has created a taunting task for the DMC as the results of their initiative have proven that there seems to be no end in sight.
