Diocese of Dibrugarh expresses deep concern over violence in Manipur

DIMAPUR, JULY 23 (MExN): The Diocese of Dibrugarh has expressed deep concern over incidents of violence which have been taking place in Manipur, in particular the horrific incident of May 4 where dignity of two women were violated by a mob in the district of Thoubal.

In a press statement, Most Rev Dr Albert Hermom, Bishop of Dibrugarh said such incidents in Manipur which have been taking place since the month of May 2023 have not only brought suffering among the people but also have led to loss of lives and properties.

“We categorically condemn the gender-based violence and humiliation as it has far reaching consequences on the victims’ physical and psychological well-being,” the press statement read.

It also condemned the inaction of the state police and the administration in bringing the culprits to book for a long period of two months and their inability to generally tackle the debilitating violence in the state of Manipur.

“Our hearts go out to the many women who have suffered similarly in the hands of unscrupulous miscreants, to the families who are rendered homeless, children made orphans and families who have lost their loved ones in this violence,” it stated.

During these difficult times, the Diocese of Dibrugarh has called upon all to remain calm and respect one another’s rights and freedoms to maintain peace in the state so that no such gruesome incident occurs again.
