Disqualify NPF candidate over cash seizure: NPCC

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 17 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has written to the Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commission of India demanding strong action against the NPF party and its candidate H. Nyemli Phom of 49 Tamlu A/c against the backdrop of the cash seizure at Longleng from the NPF candidate on Saturday, February 16, 2013.

Among others, the NPCC wants the Election Commission (EC) to disqualify the candidature of H Nyemli Phom for violating the Model Code of Conduct in carrying huge amount of unaccounted cash worth Rs 1 crore. The letter has also demanded impounding the helicopter chartered by the NPF and action initiated against the pilots for making an unscheduled landing without seeking clearance from district administration and Assam Rifles authorities.

Further strong action has been demanded against the NPF party to the extent of “nullifying their party for deliberately violating the Model Code of Conduct in officially sanctioning this huge amount” by the party Treasurer which the NPCC has termed as outrightly illegal. The NPCC also wanted the EC to seal all entry and exit points on the State and district borders besides undertaking strict checking and frisking across the State to prevent further illegal transfer of cash, which according to the NPCC, is being used to influence the outcome of voting.

The NPCC was of the view that unless the huge flow of cash is controlled, conduct of free and fair elections will never happen and for which the Election Commission will be held accountable for any such lapses. “Therefore, in the interest of all concerned, strong action on the above four demands placed by the NPCC is to be taken swiftly to ensure smooth conduct of polling scheduled on 23rd February 2013”, stated the letter issued by Medokul Sophie, General Secretary (Admn) & NPCC Coordinator.
