Visits police stations, jail and support & shelter homes 

Kohima, March 1 (MExN): The District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) undertook Impact Tour to police stations (PS), jail, and support and shelter homes in collaboration with the Superintendent of Police (SP) to render legal services through Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs). 

A press release from the NSLSA said that the Dimapur DLSA, during the visit on February 27 stressed on the role of legal services and discussed on the pre-arrest, arrest and remand stage. Legal services were provided to some of the inmates of Central jail. The Dimapur DLSA visited Central Jail, District Jail, West PS, Women PS, East PS, and Chümoukedima PS. The team comprised of Retainer lawyer, Project Assistant, Panel lawyers and PLVs.

Kohima DLSA in collaboration with SP, Kohima conducted the tour from February 21-27 and visited Traffic Control Room, District Jail, South PS, South Traffic PS, Women Police Station, North PS, and North Traffic PS. The team comprised of Retainer Lawyer, Panel Lawyer, PLVs. On February 25, the Kohima DLSA Panel Lawyers and PLVs visited Cradle Ridge Home, a home for HIV/AIDS affected children. At present eight children are been looked after by the Home, where six of them are minors. The team interacted with the caretaker and children and distributed legal awareness pamphlets. 

On February 26, Longleng DLSA visited Children Home. Project Assistant, P Monyei Phom briefed the services provided by the Legal Services Authority and Panel Lawyer, Panglang Y Phom highlighted the Rights of the Children. The team had an interaction with the caretaker where she apprised that there were 20 children at present and enrolled in private school. The Longleng DLSA provided basic essential commodities to the children, caretaker and helpers.

On the same date, Peren DLSA led by Retainer Lawyer, Asungbe N Hau and Project Assistant, Italang Ramlia visited Senior Citizen’s Home at Ngwalwa village wherein the Retainer Lawyer appraised the residents about their legal rights and various schemes available for the Old Age Persons. The team distributed food items to the residents and staff of the Senior Citizen Home.

On February 25, Phek DLSA team led by JMFC cum Secretary Phek DLSA, Cheliam Khiamniungan, NJS in collaboration with SP Phek, Vesupra Kezo, NPS, visited District Jail Phek. The team interacted with inmates and jail officials and also inspected jail premises. On February 23, the Phek DLSA visited the recently inaugurated Sakhi One Stop Centre and interacted with the OSC staff. They also visited PS Phek, PS Meluri and Women Cell Phek. 

Kiphire DLSA visited the police stations and district jail on February 16. The team shared various provisions of accused persons as per the law and imparted knowledge on the role of legal services authority.

Zunheboto DLSA on February 10 visited Sakhi One Stop Centre along with Zunheboto JMFC cum DLSA Secretary, Wokono Yhoshü where topics under domestic violence were discussed with center administrator, and Counselor, Sakhi One Stop Centre. Pamphlets/Bookmarks were also handed over to Sakhi One stop center, Center Administrator for further references.

On February 4, Wokha DLSA visited Support Centre, Sakhi-One Stop Centre Wokha led by JMFC cum Secretary, Wokha Khrievono Seletsu. The team conducted Impact Tour to six police stations and jails located at Wokha town and sub-divisions under Wokha district. The tour covered Wokha PS, Women PS, Wokha, District Jail Wokha, Ralan PS, Para Legal Volunteers, Sanis PS, Bhandari Police Station. Rights of the Accused, Women Child and Legal Aid topics were sensitized to the police station and jail personnel. Legal Counselling was also provided to the jail inmates.

Under the Impact Tour, Mokokchung DLSA officials visited Police Station 1, Prosecution Court, Traffic Control, and Women PS and interacted with the officer-in charge and staff about the role of legal services, the rights of arrested person. The team apprised and on the duties of remand lawyers assigned to every police station.
