DMC reiterates plastic ban, warns of strict penal action
Dimapur, June 19 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on Friday reiterated the complete prohibition on the manufacture, stocking, distribution, sale and use of Single-Use Plastic (SUP) within its jurisdiction, warning of strict penal action against violators.
The ban, originally enforced through a notification dated September 13, 2024, remains in force as per the directives of the Government of Nagaland. Despite repeated notifications and awareness campaigns, the DMC observed that certain establishments and individuals continue to use and trade in prohibited SUP items in violation of government orders.
The civic body has now directed all business establishments, commercial institutions, traders, dealers, shopkeepers, vendors and the general public to strictly comply with the ban and adopt environmentally friendly alternatives such as biodegradable and reusable carry bags.
In a press release, Chief Executive Officer of DMC, Dr Kuzonyi Wideo, announced that the Council shall intensify inspection and enforcement drives within its jurisdiction. Any person, shop, establishment, or institution found manufacturing, storing, selling, distributing, or using prohibited SUP items shall be liable for penal action, including seizure of materials and imposition of penalties as provided under relevant laws, rules, and government notifications.
The DMC has appealed to all citizens, business establishments, market associations, ward authorities, and other stakeholders to extend their full cooperation towards making Dimapur a cleaner, greener, and environmentally sustainable city. The press release, which reiterates the ban, shall come into immediate effect, it added.
