Dimapur, May 19 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has sought urgent intervention of Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav against the compulsory imposition of Sanskrit in CBSE schools in the state, citing inadequate academic preparation, trained teaching personnel, or transition support for students.
The DNSU, in a representation submitted through the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, has requested an immediate review of the decision, suspension of implementation until proper teaching staff and learning support are made available and consultation with schools, parents and student bodies before introducing major academic changes.
The union clarified that its concern was not against learning any language, but stemmed from the sudden manner in which the change was being introduced without adequate transition support for students.
“Many students are already under heavy academic pressure, and the compulsory introduction of Sanskrit without proper groundwork is causing confusion, anxiety, and fear of poor academic performance”, the representation stated.
One of the most serious concerns highlighted by the DNSU was the absence of proper Sanskrit teachers in many schools, along with the lack of tuition or remedial support for students who had no prior background in the subject. “In this situation, making Sanskrit compulsory without first ensuring teacher availability and support systems places an unfair burden on students,” the union added.
The DNSU earnestly appealed that the welfare of students be given priority and that no subject be made compulsory in a manner that disadvantages learners due to administrative and infrastructural shortcomings. “A careful, inclusive, and student-friendly approach will help avoid unnecessary hardship and ensure that educational policy is implemented fairly,” the representation said.
The union has requested the Governor’s office to intervene urgently and direct the concerned departments and authorities to review the matter in the interest of students, parents, and the academic future of the young people of Nagas.
The representation was signed by Hinoto P Aomi (President), Michael Kath (General Secretary), and Kevin Gonmei (Secretary, Education) of DNSU.
