Exit polls, made the headlines, predicting a comfortable win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The opposition Congress, however, has not been happy with top leaders terming it a phony exercise.
In line with the stand taken by the top leaders, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) also maintained that the people should not be swayed by the “falsity” of the exit polls. “It is a ploy of the BJP government because they know that the people of India have voted for the INDIA bloc,” said Yanger Longkumer, the Chairperson of the NPCC Communications Department at a press conference in Dimapur on June 3.
He said that the people should instead wait for the counting of votes and the subsequent declaration of results, expected to be out by evening, June 4. According to him, the Congress was confident of the INDIA bloc getting the numbers, a minimum of 295 seats, and forming the government at the Centre.
Longkumer further sought to clarify a rumour about the NDPP and other regional parties allegedly making claims of siding with any party or alliance that comes to power in Delhi. “They are saying that they'll ally with the Congress if the INDIA bloc wins, and continue with the BJP if the NDA forms the government. They are saying that either way, they will be with the ruling bloc at the Centre,” he said.
On the contrary, he said that the decision to stitch alliances is not with the NDPP, or even the NPCC, but with the All India Congress Congress Committee and INDIA bloc leadership.
“We have all seen the outpouring of unprecedented support for the Congress in Nagaland. We are confident that the sentiment will translate into votes… and S Supongmeren Jamir (Congress candidate for the Nagaland seat) will be declared the winner,” he added.
