Sanis, June 27 (MExN): Recognising the importance of creating awareness vis a vis the plastic ban by the government, the Block Task Force of Wokha District under the chairmanship of Dr Manazir Jeelani, DC Wokha, conducted a seminar on plastic pollution at Thillong Village community hall for shopkeepers in Doyang Area on June 26.
It has been informed that the ban on single use plastic, packaged drinking water and styrofoam products comes into force from July 15 in Sanis HQ jurisdiction and defaulters would be fined as per standing orders.
“This area lies along the Wokha-Merapani road which is the main stoppage point for both travelers and commercial vehicles and trucks,” ADC Sanis stated in a press note adding that it also becomes a tourist hot spot during the Amur Falcon roosting season which brings in hundreds of tourists both local and foreign.
The seminar was attended by 40 participants including shopkeepers, GBs, DBs and village functionaries. A PowerPoint presentation was presented by Seyiekhrietuo Solo, EAC Aitepyong on the adverse effects of plastic use and the alternative options to plastic. It was pointed out that our Indigenous practices were always environment friendly and we need to go back and revive those practices. Best practices of other districts were also highlighted and participants were encouraged to adopt and help propagate important habits like carrying one's own shopping bags and water bottles, planting trees and practicing waste segregation.
A short documentary on plastic by Dreamz Unlimited, produced by Department of IPR was screened followed by a few minutes of interaction. The programme was chaired by ADC Sanis while Rev. Elis Lotha offered a word of prayer.
Reusable Water bottles and government issued cloth bags were distributed to all the participants. To demonstrate alternative methods, the programme banner was made with chart papers and paper printouts and refreshments were also served in paper cups and banana leaf.
