The body of a 26-year-old youth, who had drowned at the Doyang Dam reservoir on April 11, was recovered on Friday morning, nearly a week after an extensive multi-agency search operation was launched in Wokha district.
According to sources, the body was spotted at around 5:40 AM in the main reservoir of Doyang by a fisherman who had gone to check his fish nets. Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who were on routine duty in the area, were alerted immediately and assisted in identifying and retrieving the body from the water.
Officials informed that the recovery was carried out jointly by SDRF personnel and the police, following which the body was brought ashore. Authorities are currently observing all necessary legal formalities, including inquest procedures, before handing over the body to the bereaved family members.
The youth had reportedly drowned on April 11 at the Doyang Dam, prompting a search operation involving SDRF teams, NDRF Team, NSDMA, Police personnel’s and the local community. The operation had continued over the past several days under challenging conditions, including poor underwater visibility and the depth of the reservoir.
With the recovery of the body, the search operation has been officially concluded.
Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, confirmed that the large-scale search operation, launched following the April 11 drowning incident, was officially concluded on the morning of April 17 with the recovery of the body.
He acknowledged the tireless efforts of all agencies involved, noting that the operation was carried out with remarkable coordination and persistence under challenging conditions, including poor underwater visibility and the depth of the reservoir.
Kumar expressed gratitude to all line departments, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), SDRF, North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), and residents of neighbouring villages for their cooperation and support.
Describing the incident as “deeply unfortunate and disheartening,” the Deputy Commissioner appealed to the public, particularly fishermen and residents living near water bodies, to exercise caution, use appropriate safety gear, and avoid venturing out alone.
