Dr Yhome seeks community support for growth of education sector in Nagaland

Festive mood surrounded Dr Neilhouzhii Kire Government Higher Secondary School, Seikhazou as it celebrated 75th Anniversary (1948- 2023) today at D Khel Indoor Stadium, Kohima village under the theme “Pledge for fulfillment.”

In commemoration of 75th anniversary of the school, Nagaland School Education & SCERT Advisor Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome inaugurated two classrooms extension constructed through Performance Incentive Grant- NECTAR- Lighthouse and community mobilization.

Gracing the occasion as the special guest, Dr Yhome sought community’s support for the growth of education sector in the state. “It is not just the role of the teachers and parents, it requires the whole community to raise a child to become a successful person,” he said.

Stating that church form as the biggest building in almost all the villages, he also requested the churches to give interest in school infrastructure.

Stating that a small state like Nagaland is also striving to succeed in this competitive world, he said “We are striving and for us to thrive, it is only education which can set us free.”

“To become a teacher, teacher need to be trained,” he said.  “Today, we have the best teachers,” he said adding that all the teachers in government institutions are highly trained.



Plea for introduction of science stream

Also delivering short speech, former minister Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire thanked all the concerned for renaming this school into Dr Neilhouzhii Kire GHSS in 2017.

He also made a plea to the school education advisor to expedite the process for introduction of science stream in this school.

Complimenting the school for attaining 75 years, Rtd. headmistress K. Mary said “Let us move forward and face various challenges ahead.”

The programme was chaired by Zelapranuo Kire while Pastor Rokoviu, Christian Revival Church Chedema Model invoked God's blessings. Dr Neilhouzhii Kire GHSS Choir and school teachers presented special numbers while vote of thanks was proposed by Ketuonei Kire. The celebration concluded with jubilee feast.

About Dr Neilhouzhii Kire GHSS Seikhazou

Dr Neilhouzhii Kire GHSS Vice Principal, Rose Chishi stated that the school was established in 1948 as a private lower primary school through the initiative of the community leaders to provide education to the people.

The government recognized and upgraded the school to Government Middle English School in 1956. The school continues to grow to become Government High School in 1982. Further, the Government upgraded the school to Government Higher Secondary School with arts and commerce streams in 2010 and activated in 2014.

In recognition of the extraordinary achievement made by Dr Neilhouzhii Kire, who is from Daphfutsumia Khel, Kohima village for being the first matriculate (1918) and medical doctor (1922) amongst the Nagas, the state Government re-named the school after him as Dr Neilhouzhii Kire Government Higher Secondary School on August 10, 2017, she stated in a souvenir.

The present school site was donated by late Diechulie Haralu, late Lhousielie Yiese, late M Zeluotuo Sachu and late Lhouzhalie Sorhie. “The school is grateful to these people for their generosity in donating land for the purpose of community education,” Chishi stated. 

At present, the school house 635 students from classes 6 to 12.

A beacon of academic excellence 

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his message in 75th Anniversary’s souvenir penned “Over the past seven and a half decades, this institution has stood as a beacon of academic excellence, nurturing young minds and fostering a spirit of innovation and leadership. The legacy of this school resonates in the achievements of its alumni, who have excelled in various fields, contributing significantly to society.”

“Dr Neilhouzhii Kire Govt Higher Secondary School Seikhazou has contributed immensely to the educational landscape of the state, catering to the educational needs of people from far and near, from both rural and urban areas. The school has been a beacon of hope and has been resilient in providing access to education for all sections of the society,” stated Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary School Education & SCERT.

“As you step in to a new phase, I fervently wish that the school continue to impart rich knowledge and wisdom to its students and produce many intellectuals who could shape the future of our people and the world as a whole,” Nagaland School Education Principal Director Thavaseelan K conveyed.

“I am happy to note that in Dr. Neilhouzhii Kire GHSS they lay equal emphasis in training students in vital aspects of life like sports, extra curriculum activities along with academics,” stated Pele Khezhie, chairman, D Khel Council.

“Over the past 75th years, the institution has played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of numerous students with its unwavering commitment in providing quality education, fostering an environment of growth and learning which has undoubtedly made a significant impact on the society,” said Vilalhou Sorhie, president Kohima Village Students’ Union while Dapfhiitsumia Students’ Union president Mhasituo Kire stated “ The school has shaped minds, nurtured talents and sowed the seed of knowledge that have grown into countless success stories.”
