Department of History, Eastern Christian College conducted a lecture on ‘political history of the Nagas’ with Dr SC Jamir as the speaker on February 17.

Dimapur, February 17 (MExN): The Department of History, Eastern Christian College Padumpukhuri, as part of the syllabus of B.A 6th semester History honours (603), conducted a one-day lecture on the topic ‘political history of the Nagas’ on February 17.

The objective of the lecture was to impart the knowledge of the political history of the Nagas to the students, stated a press release issued by the Department of History, ECC.

Veteran Naga politician, Dr SC Jamir, as the main theme speaker spoke on the topic, “A panoramic view of Naga political movement visa vis contemporary political realities.”

The former Chief Minister of Nagaland (1980-2003), former Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha, Dr Jamir shared his deep concern about the kind of history which the present generation would beget as an enduring and enlightened legacy for the future generation of the Nagas.

“Leaders of all hues are thoroughly obsessed with the past, and maybe either out of ignorance or lack of interest they hardly talk about the present and the future of the people. If we continue to harp on the already discarded and outdated tune, we shall be left out from the contemporary world,” observed Dr Jamir, who is also the recipient of India's third highest civilian award Padma Bhushan, 2020 for his works in public affairs.

“Thus, keeping in view of this imperative,” Dr Jamir navigated his lecture to let the gathering “examine in-depth, the real malady that is affecting and ruining the health of Naga polity.”

He also highlighted about the early evolution of Naga Political Movement: pre-eminence of the Naga National Council (NNC), Emergence of the Naga People's Convention, Results of the first Naga People's Convention 1957 and Conundrum of Political Agreement with Underground Groups. He concluded the session by answering questions put forward by the audience.

The programme was chaired by Chumei T Phom, B.A 6th semester, welcome address by Mharhoni Yanthan, HoD, Department of History, salutation by Dr Dominic K Khanyo and note of vote of thanks and benediction by Busongna, assistant professor, Department of History.
