DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 8 (MExN): Former Governor and 5 times Nagaland Chief Minister, Dr SC Jamir received the Padma Bhushan in New Delhi on November 8. He received the award from the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the capital.

Jamir is one of the founders of the State of Nagaland and the sole living signatory of the 16 Point Agreement with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his team in 1960. 

Born on October 17, 1931, Dr Jamir was a member of the Interim Body of Nagaland and then was elected as the first Lok Sabha member to represent Nagaland in the Indian Parliament in 1961. He was Parliamentary Secretary to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Deputy Minister under Indira Gandhi. 

Dr Jamir also served as Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha. He was also member of the Congress Working Committee for many years. As Chancellor of the States, he had reformed selection of Vice Chancellors whereby selection of the Vice Chancellor was made more transparent. 

He has received many different awards from private institutions and organizations. He was conferred doctorate (Honorary Causa) from Serampore University, Nagaland University, Hanso University, Sri Jagdiprasad Tiberwala University, and Cambodia University.
